Although his most notable achievement might be a surprise barrier trial victory over the champion sprinter Ka Ying Rising, Linebacker appears to be in the ideal situation to secure a race day win at Rosehill.
The gelding has attracted early support, shortening from $11 to $6 for Saturday’s Alan Brown Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill. This race marks his opportunity to claim his first win since last year’s Silver Eagle (1300m).
His preparation mirrors that of his Silver Eagle triumph, which also followed a surprising defeat of Ka Ying Rising in a 1000m trial at Randwick 11 days prior. Linebacker will again enter Saturday’s event with precisely 11 days separating him from another strong trial performance. Despite not having won for nearly a year, the five-year-old has consistently performed well in competitive races.
“His first-up run last time in the Canterbury Stakes, he got beaten a length-and-a-half in what turned out to be a good form race. As was the George Ryder (Stakes),” co-trainer Tom Charlton stated. “He gets in with 55-1/2 (kilos), so he’s well weighted against some of those top performers on his best form. And his run the other day, he couldn’t have done any more. It was a sit and sprint. I think he was the only horse to break 33 (seconds) home, and he can’t go much quicker than that.”
Linebacker’s upcoming start at Rosehill will be his second run back this campaign. He finished fourth behind fellow Alan Brown Stakes competitor General Salute in the Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400m) at his last outing.
He has a proven record over the course and distance of Saturday’s contest, having achieved Group 1 success as a three-year-old when he defeated Broadsiding in the 2025 Randwick Guineas (1600m).
While the Alan Brown Stakes has only recently been elevated to black-type status this year, it has drawn a strong field. Linebacker is among five Group 1 winners competing in the $1.5 million feature race.
“It’s an incredible field and if it was a Group One, you wouldn’t be saying that’s wrong,” Charlton commented. “It’s a very hot race but if he can get a few things go his way, it wouldn’t surprise us (if he won).”
Zac Lloyd is scheduled to ride Linebacker, who will start from barrier eight after three horses were scratched.
