Trainer Liam Howley and connections of Luvya Mumma have set their sights on a ‘Black Type’ win early in the filly’s career, heading to Launceston for Friday night’s Listed Tasmanian Oaks (2100m).

After Luvya Mumma’s impressive maiden win over 1612m at Kilmore on February 11, Howley looked for the next suitable step for the filly. Unable to find a fitting race in Victoria, he turned to Tasmania for a Black Type opportunity.

“A win here would add valuable Black Type to her page for future breeding prospects,” Howley said. “We’ve always thought she would be a 2000-metre horse, and this race has come at the right time.”

Howley believes the filly, despite being only in her fifth race start, is ready for the challenge. “It’s a step up, but the competition will be similar to what she’d face back home, so we thought a trip away could help her mature.”

Victorian-trained fillies Suntora, Cinch, and Move The Torana will also compete against six local three-year-olds. Howley reports Luvya Mumma has settled in well after her boat trip to Launceston, and he’s hopeful the experience will toughen her up for future challenges.
