A wet track could force a change of plans for Running By, who’s slated to run in Saturday’s MRC Chairman’s Club Handicap (1440m) at Caulfield.

Drawn wide in barrier 15 with John Allen booked, the mare may instead be saved for the Leilani Series Final (1400m) at Flemington the following week.

Ciaron Maher’s assistant trainer Jack Turnbull said the stable prefers firm ground for the five-year-old, whose best form has come on top of the ground.

Running By was runner-up in the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes (1400m) in February, and scored wins at Caulfield and in the Inglis Bracelet (1600m) at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival — all on good tracks.

“She’s a fast ground horse,” Turnbull said. “She’s progressing well, and her last start placing on June 14 suggests she’s not far off a win.”

The stable remains undecided on distance or venue for her next outing.
