Securing black-type success holds great value for a filly’s prospects as a future broodmare.

The recent Flemington victor Exit is now headed to Adelaide aiming for a stakes triumph in the Listed H C Nitschke Stakes (1400m) at Morphettville Parks this Saturday.

Trained by Ciaron Maher, the filly also holds an entry in the Group 3 James H B Carr Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on Saturday, though no jockey is confirmed there, whereas top South Australian rider Rochelle Milnes has been secured for the Adelaide assignment.

Jack Turnbull, national assistant trainer for the Ciaron Maher team, noted that the Adelaide option appeared the easier target.

“Hopefully we can get a Black Type victory and that’s why we’re going,” Turnbull said.

“There was a horse in Sydney that was undefeated and obviously the one to beat, and it was drawn outside us, but we’ve decided on Adelaide given it’s a more realistic chance in terms of winning.

“She was an expensive yearling and if we can get Black Type on her page with victory as a three-year-old, it would be huge for her.”

Exit boasts two victories from her eight career outings so far, and Turnbull anticipates further improvement with added racing.

In her latest appearance over 1400m at Flemington, Exit powered away on heavy track conditions for a comfortable success ridden by Jamie Melham.

She claimed her maiden win at Sandown back in July on soft ground.

“She will continue to get better, and she’s really come on with the blinkers,” Turnbull said.

The distance suits perfectly at 1400 metres.

Over this journey, she shows tactical speed. Position her flexibly, and from gate six, she ought to settle among the leading group of four or five.

She performs well on soft tracks, meaning any rainfall would suit her ideally.
