Mark Minervini set for Super day on home track at Newcastle

The Mark Minervini-trained Super will be shooting for a home track hat-trick when he lines up in the Hungerford Hill Handicap at Newcastle.

Super will take his place in the field of 16 for the 1600m event at the provincial track’s stand-alone meeting on Saturday.

The Broadmeadow-trained five-year-old is coming off two local tearaway wins in benchmark 68 company, the latest over 1600m on October 31.

The royally-bred Super has been a model of consistency but his form has gone to another level since Minervini added blinkers to his gear earlier this year.

Super is by alpha sire Snitzel out of Good Weekend, who is an unraced full sister to 2007-2008 Australian Horse of the Year Weekend Hussler.

Newcastle was rated in the good range on Friday which will suit Super, whose best form is on dry tracks.

Minervini brought the gelding across from South Australia when the stakes-winning Adelaide trainer made the move to Newcastle in August last year.

Super was also nominated for a benchmark 1550m race at Canterbury on Friday night but connections opted to keep their in-form chestnut at home where he has won three times since August.

Saturday’s race is a step up in grade but the horse gives the impression he is well up to mixing it at the higher level and gun Irish apprentice Tom Sherry renews their association after partnering him to a resounding 5-1/4 length win over 1400m two runs back.

Super’s main opposition on Saturday looks to come from the Chris Waller-trained Prospectus who has been campaigning well in Brisbane this season.

Prospectus won a 1600m class three race at Eagle Farm last month and has since completed a brace of seconds over the same distance at Doomben.

Super has drawn barrier nine and was a $4.40 second elect behind $4 favourite Prospectus with TAB fixed odds on Friday.
