Mating Call draws wide again for Thousand Guineas test

The barriers have been unkind to talented filly Mating Call, who has once again drawn wide ahead of Saturday’s Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield.

It’s the fourth time in as many starts the Dan Clarken and Oopy MacGillivray-trained filly has copped a wide gate, jumping from barrier 10 of 12 for her toughest test yet.

After winning her maiden on debut at Balaklava, Mating Call has continued to impress, finishing third in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington last start under Jamie Mott.

“Sandown wasn’t a great experience for her as she got exposed, but in a good way, she’s a very competitive filly,” MacGillivray said. “Once she gets open air, she wants to get going.”

MacGillivray believes the Caulfield pressure will suit the filly, who worked well on the track during the week.

“It’s not a bad effort to go from a maiden to a Group 1 in four starts,” she said. “Good horses continue to step up and that is what she is doing.”
