Angela Davies will saddle up progressive sprinting four-year-old Our Kobison and has the added bonus of James Mcdonald onboard as she looks for her next banner horse.

Davies, who has already notched up her first winner of the 2023/2024 season from just two runners, says the speedy son of Kobayashi is capable of measuring up in town.

“He ran very fast sectionals the other day, he can run time. I wouldn’t be taking him to town if I didn’t think he could measure up,” Davies said.

Our Kobison led all of the way over 900m at Newcastle just 10 days ago but has been encouraged by the gelding’s performance and is looking to strike while the iron’s hot.

“I usually wouldn’t back them up so quickly within a couple of weeks, but it looked a nice race before the carnival starts. When the carnival starts everyone gets pushed back a bit and the midweek races get much tougher,” Davies said.

The last time leading jockey James McDonald rode for Davies, they combined to win at Rosehill with Deep Snow and Davies said there will be a bit to play out with race tactics.

“It’ll depend on how the track is playing with the rail out, there’s horses drawn inside with speed so it’ll just be up to James to get him around that corner, but he’s the best in the country,” Davies said.

Davies, who has maintained a very strong 24% winning strike rate over her career, is hoping she can find another horse to step up and be the face of the boutique operation, revealing that stable star Through The Cracks has been retired.

“I retired him yesterday. He had a fetlock injury… he’s nine years old. It’s such a shame because he’d come back so well and we never saw the best of him. Hopefully we can find another one to step up,” Davies said.

Through The Cracks won 7 races from 24 starts, including the 2020 Provincial Championships Final, amassing over $600,000 in prize money.
