Mindspace on trial to avoid being gelded

Mark Newnham is doing all he can to take bad luck out of the equation for well-related colt Mindspace ahead of the two-year-old’s Randwick debut.

A full brother to Group 1 winner Nakeeta Jane, Mindspace has shown glimpses of ability but his coltish manners and lack of focus are already wearing thin.

While Newnham is all but resigned to the youngster being gelded, he wants to give him one start as a colt to see if Mindspace can change his fate.

To ensure the juvenile has no excuses, Newnham has fitted him with blinkers for the Elite Sand & Soil Handicap (1200m) on Saturday.

“The main objective is to turn him into a good racehorse and that is probably as a gelding,” Newnham said.

“You end up encouraging their bad traits the longer you keep them a colt.

“He is quite talented, but he hasn’t displayed that in the trials, and he is a bit inconsistent in his work.

“I thought I’d give him one opportunity as a colt. I just didn’t necessarily want to run him on heavy ground and give him an excuse, but there may not be time to wait for a dry track.”

Having trained several members of Nakeeta Jane’s family, Newnham bought Mindspace for $310,000.

While the colt bore little similarity to his accomplished sibling as a yearling, he was a stand-out in his own right.

“I’ve trained a lot of the family and they have all been a bit different,” Newnham said.

“He is probably the best type she (dam Lustre Lady) has thrown.

“Being by So You Think, he should get better as he gets older. It’s just about getting him focused enough to turn him into a good racehorse.”

Mindspace will be partnered by Tom Sherry, who has been in outstanding form with wins at five of his past 11 rides, including a double at the midweek Randwick-Kensington meeting.

Newnham has likewise had his eye in, winning with seven of his last 10 runners, six of them ridden by Sherry.
