Mitchell Beer hoping for more joy at Sandown races

Mitchell Beer is hoping to parlay a winning treble at Albury into a midweek city win at Sandown.

Albury trainer Mitchell Beer was like a cat on a hot tin roof when flying home from a trip to New Zealand inspecting recent purchases.

It wasn’t until the plane landed that he learned of a winning treble at his home course on Monday.

“The plane took off three minutes before the first winner and I managed to watch the last one as we were landing,” Beer said.

“It was an interesting flight. I was pacing up and down. There was no wifi, and I was fretting, but it was a pleasant surprise when the texts started coming through.

“It’s great to have winners anywhere, but when you go away and your staff are in charge and take on that responsibility, make the decisions, I was rapt for them.

“They were over the moon and they actually questioned why I was coming to trackwork this morning.”

Beer is hoping the Albury treble can be parlayed into a victory at Sandown on Wednesday where he has Bezos and Power Me Up contesting the Ladbrokes Switch Handicap (1500m).

The trainer was pleased to learn that rain was approaching Melbourne.

“We’ve got a higher-rated horse that is claiming and a more lowly-rated horse that is in form,” Beer said.

“They both race up on the speed, they’re rock hard fit.

“Bezos should have won his last two but he’s had no luck while Power Me Up has really found form.”

Beer said the form from Power Me Up’s latest win at Albury on May 14 reads well.

He said Sharlie, a Wodonga winner by 6-¼ lengths on Saturday, finished more than eight lengths behind Power Me up last time.

“It’s only a 64 race and sometimes you steer away from them, but it would be equally as strong if it was run at Pakenham on a Thursday night or Bendigo on a Sunday, and I would prefer to be racing for $50,000,” Beer said.
