Mr Brightside is gearing up for his first international race, with the Ben, Will, and Jd Hayes-trained galloper scheduled for an 800m jump-out at Flemington on Friday.
He will have another jump-out next week before flying to Hong Kong for the Champions Mile (1600m) at Sha Tin on April 27.
The Hayes brothers are excited about the trip and have the experience of their father, David Hayes, to guide them through the lead-up.
Mr Brightside, who claimed the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield in February, last raced on March 8, finishing second in the Group 1 All-Star Mile (1600m) at Flemington.
Ben Hayes expressed excitement about Mr Brightside’s first international trip, noting that while there have been plenty of opportunities in Australia, the timing feels right now.
“It’s something we have always wanted to do,” Hayes said. “The timing wasn’t right before, but I think it’s a good year to be going.”
Hayes also mentioned that there were no immediate plans to race overseas further, as the Hong Kong trip fits perfectly into the horse’s schedule, with time for a proper break afterwards before targeting a spring campaign.
Looking ahead, the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes (1600m) and the Champions Mile (1600m) at Flemington are likely targets. “There are so many options, it’s exciting,” Hayes said.
