Mullins chases Melbourne Cup glory after Breeders’ Cup breakthrough

Irish trainer Willie Mullins will chase a long-awaited Melbourne Cup victory just days after landing his first Breeders’ Cup win in the US.

Mullins celebrated with Ethical Diamond in the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Del Mar before jetting to Melbourne to oversee Absurde’s third Cup attempt on Tuesday.

The gelding finished seventh and fifth in his previous Cup starts and comes off a solid run in the Caulfield Cup.

A brief scare arose last week when Racing Victoria vets noted an altered gait, but assistant trainer David Casey said there was no concern, with Absurde cleared to run.

“I knew he would be fine the next morning,” Casey said. “Thankfully, he was good on Friday and again on Saturday morning.”

Kerrin McEvoy takes the ride, aiming to join Harry White and Bobbie Lewis as a four-time Cup-winning jockey.
