Ohope Wins faces wide draw in Sydney debut after NZ Oaks triumph

The saying that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree holds true for promising filly Ohope Wins and her sire Ocean Park.

The victor of the New Zealand Oaks is set for her initial Australian appearance in the Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill this Saturday, marking her seventh outing in a preparation that began back in November.

Rider James McDonald confessed that the extended campaign weighed on his thoughts upon Ohope Wins’s arrival at Chris Waller’s Sydney barn, yet the three-year-old soon dispelled any doubts.

“That was probably one question mark I had on her,” McDonald said.

“But she’s got such a brilliant attitude. Her father was Ocean Park, and he was as tough as they come, and this filly feels exactly the same.

“She’s got a great appetite for work and just loves it.

“Her program would be just eat, sleep and work. She is very rigid like that and very measured in how she does everything. She is just a beautiful filly.”

Having secured three victories from six races, Ohope Wins is in her debut preparation but received a break following her success in the New Zealand Oaks (2400m) at Ellerslie on February 21.

McDonald rode her in a recent gate trial and noted her strong finish, likening Ohope Wins to the 2024 Vinery Stud Stakes winner Orchestral, who had claimed that year’s New Zealand Derby (2400m) beforehand.

“She was a good filly, Orchestral, and this one feels just as good,” McDonald said.

“It will take a good filly to beat her.”

Nine horses have been confirmed for the Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m), with Ohope Wins allocated the outside barrier.

This event serves as a classic pathway to the ATC Australian Oaks (2400m) at Randwick on April 11, where Ohope Wins stands as the standout early market elect.
