Patient approach paying off for Silver Magnate after Sandown win

Trainer Grahame Begg believes Silver Magnate has the talent to win a quality race but says patience remains the priority.

The five-year-old made it two wins from as many starts when taking out the Sportsbet Fastform Handicap (1200m) at Sandown, more than a year after his debut victory at Pakenham.

Sent out a $3.30 favourite under Jordan Childs, Silver Magnate scored by a length from Flying Valley, with Some People Callme third.

Begg said joint issues had stalled his progress but the gelding thrived in Wednesday’s Soft 5 conditions.

“The horse has got loads of ability… time has been his friend and it still might be his friend,” Begg said.

He plans to progress Silver Magnate through the grades, mirroring the path of King Zephyr, and may target the greys race during Melbourne Cup week.
