Post Impressionist out to repay new connections in Pakenham Cup

Warrnambool trainer Simon Ryan and the new ownership group of Post Impressionist are hoping to recoup some of their investment in the Listed Pakenham Cup.

A win in Saturday’s 2500m feature would deliver $180,000 in prizemoney — a significant return on the $225,000 owner Shane Morrissy paid to secure the gelding online from Lloyd and Nick Williams and James Packer.

Morrissy and Ryan have long-term plans for the Warrnambool Cup, but any prizemoney earned along the way is a bonus.

Post Impressionist first arrived in Australia under William Haggas, winning at Rosehill in March 2024 before transferring to Anthony and Sam Freedman.

“We’ve had a few horses together over time and it’s silly to put them in the paddock… it’s not as strong as what he’s been running in,” Ryan said.

“Even if he could sneak into the money, it would give everyone a bit of confidence going forward.”

Ryan says the gelding arrived in excellent order and remains fit enough to run once more before a short break.

“While the horse is fit and going, we’ll try and get some prize money… it’s probably the last race he can run in before having a few weeks off,” he said.

Only a heavy track would see him scratched, with Ryan pleased by a recent 2000m tune-up at Warrnambool.

Former Irish jockey Tom Madden takes the ride on Saturday.
