Queensland Cup moved

The final day of the winter carnival, the Queensland Cup meeting, will be moved to the Sunshine Coast following the closure of Eagle Farm.

Racing Queensland has released a revised calendar for the remainder of June and July after consultation with clubs.

Doomben will take over most of the Saturday race dates which would have been held at Eagle Farm but the Queensland Cup on July 15 will go to the Sunshine Coast.

The Sunshine Coast can accommodate a 3200m race, the distance of the Queensland Cup, and hosted the meeting in 2015 when Eagle Farm was closed on a previous occasion.

The new schedule follows RQ’s decision this week to engage one of Australia’s most experienced racing administrators, Dale Monteith, to conduct an independent review of the Eagle Farm track.

The review will consider the construction and preparation of the track, with a focus on identifying the best remediation strategies for the racing surface.

There is no indication when Eagle Farm will reopen but it might not be until next year.

RQ’s chief executive Eliot Forbes said work was continuing on the 2017/18 calendar which needed to be complete by August 1.
