Sydney’s leading trainer Chris Waller admitted he wasn’t surprised by Quick Defence’s strong finish to the Derucci Handicap at Randwick.

The workmanlike six-year-old gelding made amends for a poor last-start with a late burst snatching victory over 1600m.

“I got the fright of my life, not today but on Thursday, when my form man said third-up, Quick Defence is almost unbeatable,” Waller said.

Assisted by a smart ride by Tim Clark, Quick Defence unleashed to nab Malaise ($4.40) and $2.90 favourite The Pinnacle.

“He’s always shown ability,” Waller said.

Waller noted Quick Defence ($31) had fashioned a consistent record before finishing last at Rosehill.

“It’s good for the owners. He’s no super star but he’s popped up for a good win,” he said.
