Radiant Choice returns to town to win

Radiant Choice has returned to his former home to claim an impressive win under a big weight at Rosehill.

Formerly with Hawkes Racing, Radiant Choice is trained in country surrounds at Armidale by Stirling Osland.

He came back to town for Saturday’s Highway Handicap (1400m) for country-trained horses and made light of his top weight of 60.5kg.

Osland was not tempted to use a claiming apprentice, opting for the experience of James McDonald, who took the $7 chance to the front where he stayed.

He drifted out a little in the final stages but went on to hold out the $3.60 favourite Hemmerle by three-quarters of a length.

“We put blinkers on him last time and it sharpened him up,” Osland said.

“James did a lovely job to keep him going and he had to do it at both ends so it was a good win.”

The three-year-old has now had four starts for Osland and has won his past two wearing blinkers.

The trainer said he could return to Rosehill in two weeks for another Highway Handicap.

“There’s one here in a fortnight over 1500 metres so that could be a target,” he said.
