Ranveer set to make return at Sandown

Ranveer is set for a brief winter campaign to build some prize money ahead of the spring.

A winter meeting at Sandown may not be the time of year to see a young horse that his trainer has aspirations for in some of the bigger spring races.

But that is what is facing Ranveer and his trainer Matt Laurie on Saturday when they contest the Clanbrooke Racing Handicap (1000m).

Ranveer needs to start bulking up his prize money and Laurie is banking on a brief campaign now to do that ahead of the spring.

“He’s had too long off so with spring coming he needs pull some money into his bank and then we can back off and then time the next preparation around the better races,” Laurie said.

At his only start, Ranveer was sent out favourite when beaten by Profiteer at Flemington in December.

Profiteer went on to claim the Inglis Millennium at Randwick and later finished seventh as one of the top fancies in the Golden Slipper.

The Flemington outing was a bit of an afterthought for Laurie who had Ranveer primed for a debut shot at the Magic Millions Clockwise Classic at Ballarat in November.

“But he got quite crook and we hit him as hard as we could with what we were able to do,” Laurie said.

“He was fine when he went to Flemington and we were quite optimistic, but we felt he was slightly on the decline by that day.

“It may not have mattered as Profiteer was very good and he went on to win a good race in Sydney.”

Laurie said he was not enthused about running Ranveer on a wet track on Saturday, having had one soft trial, but said he needed to get a run into the colt ahead of another race at Caulfield on June 26.

“He’s not wound up, but we’re keen to get going,” Laurie said.

“He runs in this and it probably brings him up to speed for a race two weeks later at Caulfield.

“We’ve always thought that he was quite smart but they’ve got to come back and prove it again.”
