Richard Litt uncovers potential star in filly Caffe Florian

Richard Litt may operate on the smaller side regarding stable size, yet he possesses solid benchmarks for spotting top talent.

The handler behind dual Group 1 victor Castelvecchio and the 2021 Spring Champion Stakes winner Profondo, this Warwick Farm trainer appears set with yet another promising runner in rising filly Caffe Florian.

This Snitzel three-year-old progressed from securing her maiden victory on her second outing in November to taking out the Listed Gosford Guineas (1200m) just a month afterward, a path seldom matched during an initial campaign.

Refusing to count chickens prematurely, Litt tempers expectations for her fresh return in Saturday’s Fireball Stakes (1100m) at Randwick, though he’s keen to discover the heights she might reach for owners Wendy and Ottavio Galletta, who shared in his previous Group 1 triumphs.

“They’ve had a few good horses, and they’ve also had a few very slow horses,” Litt said.

“They’re not cheap, horses, they’re big investments, and they’d have seven or eight horses, so I’m very excited for them.

“But we keep our heads on. Anything can happen in racing and we’re just happy to be there on Saturday.”

Post her Gosford success, Caffe Florian enjoyed a brief spell, targeted squarely at the Sydney autumn carnival.

Her key target remains the Group 2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (1200m) at Randwick on April 11, an event that propelled careers like those of Joliestar (2024) and Classique Legend (2019).

The filly impressed with a sharp finish in a recent gate trial and carries over condition from her summer efforts, as Litt expects a solid showing upon resumption.

“We didn’t want to overtax her in the barrier trial, just give her a nice, easy dash and she has really come on from that nicely,” Litt said.

“There is still lots of improvement to come, and there’s a lot of water to go under the bridge, but all being well our grand final is the Arrowfield.

“She’s not screwed down 110 per cent for Saturday, but she will still run a nice race.”

With Raging Force withdrawn to run in the Challenge Stakes (1000m), nine contenders will face the starter, headed by classy colt Beadman as initial market elect.
