Ripcord headlines Luke Fernie’s Ascot team

Fresh from his Kalgoorlie Cup (2300m) triumph on Saturday, trainer Luke Fernie will be eyeing more success on Ascot’s opening day card this week.

Headlining Luke Fernie’s team on the card will be Perth Stakes (1100m) winner Ripcord, who finished second to Generosity when first-up at Belmont last month.

Fernie indicated the three-year-old would be nominated for the $100,000 Max Simmonds Stakes (1000m) and a 1200m event.

Fernie told TABadio last week he was leaning toward going straight to the Listed Belgravia Stakes (1200m) on October 28 with Ripcord, but said his work warranted a start this week.

“He worked nicely on Saturday morning,” Fernie told TABradio.

“I haven’t thought that far (what race) yet.

“I just want to watch him gallop up the straight at Belmont and see what he’s telling me.”

Ripcord is expected to be joined by stablemate Shaddow Fear at the Ascot meeting.

The filly won her first two starts in Perth, before she headed to Melbourne for three runs in blacktype company.

Despite not winning any of her three starts, Shaddow Fear produced encouraging performances in her final two outings at Flemington.

Fernie said the filly was showing encouraging signs upon her return.

“She’s come back really good,” he said.

“The winter coat is still there and hasn’t quite come out.

“Her work has been really smooth, and I can’t wait to have her back at the races.”

Consistent mare Rumour Says is also likely to feature this Saturday.
