Saturday’s closing race at Rosehill Racecourse represents both a career test and a future audition for Cross Tasman.

The Super Seth four-year-old is viewed by John O’Shea and Tom Charlton as a horse capable of stepping into richer races later in the year.

Chasing a third straight win this preparation, the gelding makes his first appearance in Saturday metropolitan grade.

“Ideally, if everything goes to plan, he might be one we’ll try and qualify for The Big Dance,” Charlton said.

“There could be a couple of options for him, country races to try and get them in that, and then we can maybe set our sights on the spring a bit more.”

Cross Tasman won just once in his initial campaign but has returned with consecutive Randwick victories over 1250m and 1300m.

The NZ$260,000 Karaka purchase was scratched from Wyong Racecourse last week due to heat, with rain forecast this time around.

His maiden win came on a Soft 7, while dam Daffodil won two Group 1s on soft ground, including the ATC Oaks.

“He drew a bit sticky last Saturday in very hot conditions and we didn’t feel that was the right thing to do, so we elected to wait this weekend,” Charlton said.

Cross Tasman has drawn barrier four in the TAB Handicap and will be ridden by Dylan Gibbons.
