Satono Glow targets Roman Consul Stakes after Flemington success

Emerging sprinter Satono Glow has already undertaken one journey to Melbourne this campaign, and if conditions align, she is poised for another trip at the month’s end.

A hiccup prior to her planned return in Sydney prompted trainers John O’Shea and Tom Charlton to divert to Victoria, where the three-year-old filly secured a commanding victory in the Cap D’Antibes Stakes (1100m) at Flemington.

Although the option to remain in the southern capital was available, Charlton indicated they opted to bring her back for Saturday’s Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill. They were confident she possessed a solid foundation from her straight-course experience, with their ultimate objective being the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on October 28.

“This race – bringing her back home and preparing her from here – we thought would be preferable to going to the Danehill (Stakes),” Charlton stated.

“She’s had two goes at the straight, so we don’t feel like we need to do that by any means. We know each time we’ve prepared her from Sydney and trucked her down (she’s won), so we’ll try to replicate that, all being well, in the Coolmore.

“The Roman Consul has such a good record going into the Coolmore in recent years and that was the main factor.”

Satono Glow, the sole filly in the Roman Consul Stakes field, attracted attention from an Everest slot holder who inquired about her connections’ interest in a start in the $20 million race.

Given her limited experience, the proposition was swiftly declined, though Charlton expressed optimism that the situation might differ in a year’s time.

“We felt that wasn’t the right race for her. We’re trying to build her profile and she’s still young,” he commented.

“We didn’t think it was the right set-up for her at this stage. Hopefully next year.”

The stable will also present Peyton in the Rosehill feature race. However, Charlton conveyed reservations about the colt’s prospects following the abandonment of his scheduled second-up run at Warwick Farm on September 23, due to him rearing in the barriers and being a late withdrawal.

“We were hoping to go there, then here,” Charlton remarked.

“He hasn’t had the perfect preparation for it, but he needs to get racing before potentially looking at something like a Red Anchor Stakes at Flemington.

“If he can run well on Saturday he will come on significantly from it.”

Peyton is currently priced at $41, while Satono Glow, aiming to be the first filly to claim the Roman Consul Stakes since Jolie Bay in 2012, is the $2.90 second favourite, trailing the $2.60 market leader, Paradoxium.
