Savvy Hallie confirmed her potential at Randwick with a breakthrough black-type victory in the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m).
The Brad Widdup-trained filly, once considered among Sydney’s best maidens, had previously run second in the Baillieu and Percy Sykes Stakes, as well as being edged out on debut by subsequent Black Opal Stakes winner King Of Pop.
After breaking through at Newcastle on August 14, Widdup admitted he was hesitant about backing her up in Saturday’s feature.
“We were meant to race at Kembla and we got the heavy 10. We didn’t go … We waited until last week and ran her and then we had to back her up here, so big call,” Widdup said.
Sent out a $3.50 chance under Jay Ford, Savvy Hallie surged late to defeat Within The Law by three-quarters of a length, with Queen Of Clubs third.
Widdup said she is likely to head to the Furious Stakes in a fortnight, though he doubts she will stretch to longer trips in the Princess series.
