Shadhavar to take age-restricted route at Caulfield before stepping up

Trainer Tom Dabernig has opted for a more measured approach with Shadhavar, choosing to run her in the Tobin Brothers Celebrating Lives Handicap (1100m) at Caulfield over the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m).

“It’s her last opportunity to run against her own age before she turns four,” Dabernig said.

“There will be opportunities for her early in the new season if we want to try her at Stakes levels against the mares.”

Shadhavar finished fifth first-up at the same track and trip on July 12. Initially disappointed, Dabernig later concluded she simply needed the run.

“There was a reasonable amount of hype… she went in as favourite,” he said.

“But the others were race fit, and she just didn’t crunch the line late.”

It’s a pattern Dabernig has noticed before. Despite trialling well, Shadhavar tends to improve with racing.

“There’s nothing like a good race day hit out to bring them on,” he said.

John Allen retains the ride on Saturday, with Dabernig confident the filly can take a step forward second-up.
