Always good to be at Doomben for midweek metro racing in QLD, the track has played unbelievably well. 9 races programmed, the rail is out 10.5m with the track currently rated a Soft 6. These conditions have me looking for horses that can be on speed nearer the rail but certainly keeping a keen eye on how the track will race throughout the day.

Race 1

 

3 SWEET SHAMROCK should get the day off to a winning start. 3rd up to the mile today, I’d expect to see J LLOYD bounce this horse straight to the front and leading all the way. He won twice at the mile last preparation, and I think he gets the race run to suit to win here.  2 BINARY is a consistent place getter, who has struggled to win in this class but should be running on again into a place.  1 SKILLFULL gets blinker off and a step up in a trip to the mile. Think its Sydney form was just fair before a first up 4th in his QLD debut for D Vandyke stable. I think a place is his best chance.

Race 2

 

The staying event for maidens, with 10 runners and a difficult puzzle to solve here! I traditionally look for value in these events, and I’ve landed on 8 GALLANT GIRL at double figure odds.  No question runs the trip, gets a positive jockey change and a good gate. She should settle near the speed and does posses enough speed at the end of 2000m to be right in the finish. Plenty of chances in this race with 6 STREET COMIC hardest to beat with 2 INVERMAY 1 MUDGEE ROAD & 7 STAR ECHO battling out the minors.

Race 3

Not a race I’m overly keen to bet into, but interested in seeing a couple of QLD’s leading stables produce some well trialed 2YO. Team Edmonds produce 4 I AM IMPINGE, by I Am Invincible, who was a Gold Coast trial winner earlier this month. He was slow away in the trial, before picking up ground along the fence under a hold, before stretching out nicely the last 150m. 6 ROCK N SUMMER from the Tony Gollan yard was also a recent trial winner, winning in good time at Doomben recently. He was also a moderate beginner, before tracking strongly to the center of the track and hitting the line well. Slight leaning to the Gollan trained runner, he looks like the 1200m will be suitable from a slightly better gate than 4 I AM IMPINGE.  5 KURUMBA hasn’t been seen publicly, so watch betting there.

Race 4

Second of the 2YO races here today and once again this is a difficult race to dissect.  6 CATALINA MISS has the best-exposed form in the race, with 2 excellent on speed runs last time. She has trialed similar this time in, compared to last time, so if she is anywhere near her best she can certainly win here.  2 JOHNNY WHITESOX chased home Darktown Strutter last time, at his first outing at the races. He should be fitter here and be hard to beat. The only concern is where he gets from the gate.  10 She’s An Eager Lass has trialed well also, and is in with a good chance here.

Race 5

1200m maiden and we have a couple short in the market looking to break a fair run of outs. 11 start maiden galloper 1 HALLSIDE REBEL has come up favorite here but has a wide alley to contend with. Second favorite 10 LAKOUDIS, is an 18 start maiden who is also looking to break through here.  5 IM JUST PINK & YES TONIGHT interest me as the 2 that can beat the favorites, and I’m happy to play a little exacta.

Race 6

The small field here, so hopes are with 3 DEFECTIVE leading here and being hard to run down. Has had 2 trials in preparation for this, and the 1200m first up looks suitable.  7 HEART OF AUSTRALIA looks the likely horse to run second, she has 11 starts for 8 runners up placing’s! She deserves to break through soon surely!  10 SEE MIRACLES gets the blinkers back on here, and while she’s found it difficult to win, gets a chance here again to finish close.

Race 7

Hot speed race here, and I think there is a good chance the speed might be overdone. I’m hoping 6 MY GIRL HAYLEY can sit behind the leader, and Lani Fancourt can angle her into clear running from the top of the straight.  She’s trialed well for this, and with the right run looks hardest to beat. 1 MISHANI SLEUTH has also trialed well, just might find these a bit slick. If the speed is overdone, he can be the one flashing late. 2 LA DOLCE VITA resumes here at her first run for Toby Edmonds, must be respected.

Race 8

I wanted to take a set against the favorite 11 BALABINA from the wide gate here. Ended up today, landing on 5 TEMPLE TILT as my best roughie. It should get a good run in transit, somewhere around three back the rail. He will need a touch of luck from the 600m point onwards if he gets it can figure in the money. He does have a win this track/distance on his CV from last prep, a repeat of that effort see’s him go close.

Race 9

4 CAPITAL CONNECTION on top here, but has come up very short.  1 DEVILS FIRE may be able to get to the fence first, and then follow the favorite, which should enable it to run second. 3 MANIAS can slot 3 back along the pegs and run into the third.
