Skyhook follows Menari’s path with tough Rosebud win

Trainer Gerald Ryan has compared rising colt Skyhook to his former star Menari after the youngster carried 60.5kg to victory in the Listed Rosebud at Rosehill.

Menari was the only other horse to win the 1100m race under that weight, doing so in 2017 before taking out The Run To The Rose (1200m) and placing in the Golden Rose (1400m).

Skyhook ($4.40) repeated the feat, defeating Grand Prairie ($5.50) by half a length, with favourite Pallaton ($2.40) two lengths back in third.

“He worked here on Wednesday week ago … this is the best horse we’ve had since Menari,” Ryan said.

The colt had a strong two-year-old campaign, winning the Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) and contesting the Golden Slipper (1200m). Ryan will now follow the Menari blueprint, targeting The Run To The Rose before the Golden Rose.

Meanwhile, Michael Freedman said Pallaton’s third was forgivable given he struck inferior ground. He may next head to the San Domenico Stakes or the Moir Stakes.
