Trainer Matthew Smith is confident Icebreaker can make his mark in town this campaign, even if victory first-up in Saturday’s Racing And Sports Handicap (1400m) proves elusive.

The four-year-old impressed last prep with three straight mile wins at Canberra and returns fresh, with Smith optimistic about his chances on rain-affected ground.

“He has won three in a row down in Canberra and he likes wet tracks,” Smith said.

“He will win in town. I don’t know if Rosehill will be his track because he gets back and runs on, but it’s a nice race to kick him off in.”

A mile race at Warwick Farm looms as the next step, with the ultimate goal being qualification for the Big Dance or Little Dance on Melbourne Cup day.

“We will try to knock over a race like a Nowra Cup and get him qualified,” Smith said.

Meanwhile, seasoned stayer True Marvel heads to the Brisbane Cup (3200m), following a solid fourth in the Sandown Cup (3200m).

“He’s a nine-year-old but he’s flying,” Smith said.

“He has an amazing two-mile record.”
