So You Are secures Randwick victory ahead of spring carnival features

So You Are, who had been runner-up twice to The Budgiesmugla in winter stakes races, finally achieved a significant win in the Drinkwise Cup at Randwick.

After maintaining a forward position throughout the Listed race on Saturday, So You Are ($3) found himself in front before the turn and powered to the finish line, winning by 1-3/4 lengths. Fernao ($6.50) finished second, with Amplify ($7.50) a further half-neck back in third.

The favourite, Thebudgiesmugla ($2.90), seemingly did not handle the firm track conditions, crossing the line in fourth.

A recent acquisition to Bjorn Baker’s stable, So You Are is campaigned by the influential Ramsey family, with patriarch Stuart Ramsey being a long-standing patron of the stable.

“When I first came over he was one of the first people to give me a horse, so to win a good race like this at Randwick is very special,” Baker commented.

“I’ve only had him for the two starts. I’ve been very lucky to get a readymade horse and he’s fairly bombproof.

“It worked out really well today. We were able to put him up there.”

Thebudgiesmugla had been aiming to extend its unblemished 2400m record in the Drinkwise Cup. Despite suffering its first defeat over the distance in six attempts, Baker suggested there were valid reasons for the performance.

“He was okay. Just the firm track, he’s going to be better (on softer ground),” he stated.

“He’s going to improve off that, and I wouldn’t be too worried going forward with him. Maybe the race shape worked against him a bit today.”

Both gallopers are slated to continue their campaigns deeper into the carnival, though Baker remains open-minded regarding their specific targets for now.

He indicated that the Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick and The Bart Cummings (2500m) at Flemington, both scheduled for October 3, would be considered for the pair.

“We’ll have a think about it and weigh it up,” Baker added.

“The ‘Metrop’ is definitely an option. A race like The Bart Cummings as well. Even the St Leger here on Everest day.”

This victory marked So You Are’s first Sydney Saturday metropolitan win of the season for Baker, following a string of near misses earlier in the term.
