Rising star apprentice jockey Luke Campbell is ready to return to riding after successfully completing a set of trials at Belmont on Monday.

Luke Campbell was back in the saddle for the first time in any capacity since injuring his knee in a fall at Sandown in early August.

On a three-month loan to leading trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Campbell’s setback came at the worst possible time.

The 21-year-old was growing in confidence and coupled with support from owners and trainers he was maximising his opportunities.

Campbell booted home 14 winners in Victoria including doubles at Pakenham and Mornington and his first at Flemington on First Immortal.

Campbell, who rode in four trials, says he can’t wait to get back in the saddle at Ascot’s season-opening meeting on Saturday.

“I’m obviously very happy to be back and fitness wise I’m feeling very good,” Campbell told The Races WA.

“All the injuries that I’ve had have seemed to have healed well and I’m not getting any pain or anything.

“Overall, very happy to be back and feeling fit and raring to go on Saturday.

“I’ll ride on Saturday, but will only take a couple of rides and work myself up from there.

“It’s been a long while and a lot of water has gone under the bridge.

“I’m happy to be back.”

Although he made quite an impression in his short stint in Melbourne, Campbell is undecided if he’ll return to the eastern states in the near future

“I’ll play it by ear,” Campbell said.

“I’ll definitely be staying here for the carnival and see what happens after that.

“I don’t know what the future holds.”
