Trainer Phillip Stokes is counting on the same approach that delivered success in a prior edition of the Robert Sangster Stakes to work wonders for Stretan Angel.
Having stables based at both Pakenham and Morphettville, it seems logical to gear up Stretan Angel for Saturday’s Group 1 feature for fillies and mares at 1200m from Stokes’ Adelaide facility, particularly since she placed third in her seasonal reappearance at Morphettville.
Yet Stokes chose to bring Stretan Angel back to her regular Pakenham base to get ready for the Robert Sangster Stakes.
Stokes has triumphed in two of the last five editions of the Robert Sangster Stakes, applying like tactics with Climbing Star who took out the race in 2024.
Climbing Star notched two preparatory efforts in Adelaide before the Robert Sangster Stakes, returning to Pakenham after each.
Stretan Angel has managed just one comeback start, ending up third behind Super Smink in the Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville on April 11.
Climbing Star had run second in that contest prior to her victory in the Robert Sangster Stakes at the following appearance.
Stokes has implemented small changes in an effort to draw a bit extra from Stretan Angel.
“I thought her first-up run was OK, and we’ve gone put the blinkers back on her, but it’s a very tough race this year,” Stokes said.
“I bought her back after her first-up run.
“I did that with Climbing Star, but she can stay over after she has this one.
“She likes her home environment, so that’s why we did it.
“Her best is good enough and I think she’s going OK, but she’s getting sold after this run and The Goodwood.”
Stretan Angel came home ninth in last year’s Robert Sangster Stakes before posting 11th in The Goodwood in her subsequent race.
The Goodwood, contested over 1200m at Group 1 level, takes place at Morphettville on May 9.
