Sydney-bound Noel Callow wins at Sandown

Jockey Noel Callow could not have wished for a better advertisement for his move to Sydney.

Callow packs his bags and heads north following his victory on Mr Fergus in the United Petroleum Handicap (2100m) at Sandown on Wednesday.

The next time Callow is seen in action will be at Wyong on February 20.

Callow’s win at Sandown on Wednesday, from two rides, followed a trip to the Sapphire Coast last weekend where he rode three winners.

“That should help me a lot riding winners for guys like Matt Dale and Joe Cleary,” Callow said.

“I’m going up there (Sydney) for a change, but also looking at the bigger picture.

“You’ve got to have a stable behind you in Melbourne as it’s dominated down here by Darren Weir and David Hayes and I don’t ride for them.

“I know I can ride but I’ve just got to give myself a chance and that chance is up in Sydney.”

Callow said he’s prepared to go anywhere in NSW to ride and will be linking with owner Sean Buckley who has a number of horses with Bjorn Baker.

It won’t be Callow’s first stint in Sydney.

He headed north before plying his trade in Singapore in 2007 where he became the first jockey to notch more than 100 winners in a season before Joao Moreira went on to beat his record.

“I went up there when all the Sydney jockeys were coming down to Melbourne for the spring carnival,” Callow said.

“I did quite well for David Payne and a few other guys so hopefully I’ll be able to slot in.

“I’ll be going everywhere and I know it’s going to take a month to get in the system.”

Apprentice Ethan Brown has an affinity with Sandown and notched a double aboard Hell On Earth in the Sheen Group Handicap and Freehearted in the Ladbrokes Handicap.

Brown described Sandown as his favourite track.

“I’ve been taught from day one to let your horse balance and get through it’s gears,” Brown said.

“Being taught that suits this track and full credit goes to Mick Kent for that.”
