Through Irish Eyes to show staying class at Flemington

Since making the move to Melbourne in 2019, Jamie Kah has ridden for a number of the big stables with her most success for a Melbourne-based stable being with Ciaron Maher and David Eustace.

Kah has more than 1100 winners to her credit in 10 years of riding with 90 of those winners being for her ‘old boss’ John MacMillan, predominantly in South Australia.

Again, predominantly in South Australia, Kah rode 86 winners for Tony Mcevoy with winners spread around another four Adelaide-based trainers.

Since becoming a training partnership in August 2018, Maher and Eustace have provided Kah with 33 winners, the most recent of those being at her return meeting at Sandown on Wednesday when she guided Pacific Ruby to a comfortable victory.

Kah has two rides for the Maher and Eustace at Flemington on Saturday, Through Irish Eyes in the afternoon’s feature, the Flemington Cup 1849 (2800m) and Incredulous Dream in the L V Lachal Handicap (1200m).

Through Irish Eyes was last victorious in the Listed VRC St Leger over Saturday’s course and distance in April 2021 and is coming off a second in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (3200m) at Eagle Farm last month.

Kah had the ride that day and Eustace said waywardness cost the stayer victory.

“He should have and would have won the Brisbane Cup if he hadn’t have got to the front and had a wander around,” Eustace said.

“He is a talented stayer, but he doesn’t know how to knuckle down and put them away.”

Eustace said Through Irish Eyes needs to get his handicap rating up if he is to be a part of the bigger races during the upcoming spring.

“He’s run some very good races without winning and the result is his handicap mark is still at a fairly low level,” Eustace said.

“We want to get his mark up so he can contest better class races during the spring.”

The Flemington Cup 1849 is being run for the third time on Saturday with Maher and Eustace winning the inaugural running in 2020 with Exemplar.
