Snowy Clark’s Easter Caulfield preview & best

CAULFIELD March 31

The traditional Easter meeting now carrying both the Victoria Handicap and Cup and a deep deep meeting for form and reckon I’ve found plenty of attractive value. Rail out to preferred 6m position (same at Caulfield Cup day) from 3m (where it was hard to make ground). Will be firm as per Caulfield normal – no rain about.

BEST BET: HOMESMAN Race 7 #1

BEST VALUE: Loads all day across tips but go EXPINSIVE R3 #13

Race 1: 3-2-5-10

JUTHOOR looks best of the 1st starters and had some early market support. Showed speed recent Flemington jump out. YULONG PLUTO and TANK ATTACK trialled together – both have ability thought no strong market leads either yet. But will need to present well against the experience of SUNSET WATCH and form out of Ballarat win (Muswellbrook) holds up well now. SANGLIER (form around Oohood) comes back to Melbourne after well placed Wyong maiden win. Stakes runs here previous were sound. Think CALIFORNIASUPRISE has come back well 2nd campaign (2 trials) and good to see Froggy Newitt back in town.

SUGGESTED: SUNSET WATCH – an easy watch?

Race 2: 2-3-4-7

Going HEAR THE CHANT (been on wrong leg with it both runs this time in) but now around a corner (has won here) after being left alone on inside Flemington in race won by Quilista (who of course won in Sydney last week. So that will do me over CRYSTAL FOUNTAIN who is 2/3 fresh and back from rushed Perth trip. Obviously good ability. OUR GLADIATOR has come back well with two short course wins while SCUZI gradates to Saturday grade off three good wins through the BM grades from 58-70 but doubt it has the class of top two picks.

SUGGESTED: HEAR THE CHANT to bounce back.

Race 3: 13-6-10-17

Tough race but found value (around $19) EXPINSIVE – enjoying good campaign and liked the way it found line back from 1600m to 1400m at Geelong. Stays that trip here and can get cuddled run and with some luck late, reckon can give us a great sight. SABOTAGE has resumed this campaign where it left off and though yet to win 1400m (4 goes), looks absolutely ready now. CHIPPENHAM was in a hot race for a BM78 last time (5 weeks ago – Call Me Handsome). Respect. SIMPLY SPLASHING took on the Echuca Cup last star when big gap between run. Well placed here.

SUGGESTED: Value race, having something on EXPINSIVE.

Race 4: 2-1-4-6

A few form lines, the Demerara race (PLOVERSET 2nd, TARCOOLA SPIRT 3rd – both sound – FOX SWIFT 6th – ok – TIME AWAITS 7th – had issues – PURE EMOTION 8th – no). Then you have REGIMEN who was good in Typhoon Tracy then terrific at Flemington. Like it drawn out for cover around the one corner. Other key is BLONDIE – seemingly always under-rated including by me but the 2nd SHOALS when led 2nd-up last campaign after 1st-up win puts her right in this.

SUGGESTED: Race shapes well for REGIMEN.

Race 5: 2-1-7-6

Another challenging race with many on trial at trip or emerging into this distance range with some promise but finally going with INDERNILE on top though quickly out from 1400m to the 2000m but has never run poorly and always shaped a horse looking for this trip, think its more seasoned from better form races than many up and comers who might be heading to SA or Qld Derby campaigns. WOLFENDALE has been there and as a Hobart Guineas winner 2100m then 2nd to stablemate Civil Disobedience has the grounding. Then looking at HAN XIN who reckon will roll along forward here and now out to 200pm given great sight. CREEDENCE comes off impressive maiden when out to this trip at only 3rd start. Other hopes but happy with top pick at $11.

SUGGESTED: Take the $11 INDERNILE.

Race 6: 8-2-3-11

Another tough race. Obvious favourite is TOP OF THE RANGE unlucky last time Flemington and ready for this trip now. Big respect for winning machine YOGI, especially resuming at 1800m (stablemate CHEQUERED FLAG has tied in form but reckon The Bool awaits it). Waller’s pair QUICK DEFENCE (fit) and NAVAL WARFARE (was good resuming Soho Ruby race so form ties in) are both respected which means POW WOW is in too. Others include SAVATAG ex Kiwi progressing nicely to 1800m in form here.

SUGGESTED Going to have something YOGI at $11. Been good to me at much shorter odds and knows how to win.

Race 7: 1-2-3-4

Rarely get Australian Cup form in an Easter Cup but that makes HOMESMAN the appealing runner especially reverting to more aggressive tactics here as did when held off Almandin in the Victoria Cup. (GOLDEN MANE ran ok in that race also). BERISHA is the value chasing the tempo here having found winning form at 1800m. MIDTERM debuts in Oz a gelding and easy to read his form being acceptable enough for this. And positive vibes from stable. ODEON (has a spring win over LIFE LESS ORDINARY) was solid 2nd-up in small Blamey. Likes Caulfield and trip will suit.

SUGGESTED: Whatever beats HOMESMAN wins. And doubt they can or will.

Race 8: 15-10-6-8

Terrific contest. Have found STEEL FROST on the limit here around $11. Has won impressively Caulfield 1400m with 59kg. race just got away from it 1200m at Morphettville resuming when looked so so, more pressure and can see it trucking into this nicely. Likewise forgiving WIDGEE TURF for $1.45 failure Wangaratta when chasing VOBIS prize and back to 55kg now. THEANSWERMYFRIEND profiles as the right horse to run favourite and be hard to nail, going to land right there from draw and repeat of Sir Rupert Clarke run is enough. KEN’S DREAM was adequate in the Newmarket not back out to 1400m for 1st time this prep. Have to include.

SUGGESTED: Some value again with STEEL FROST.

Race 9: 12-1-6-10.

OK, HANDSOME THIEF has been costly to me, beaten favourite all 4 runs this time in and unlucky clearly in two of them. Can turn it around on MILWAUKEE who I expected to see out past 1200m after good return win. STAR STEALER was terrific with the 60kg at Colac, previous Caulfield run behind Eurack says yes. Respecting Tim Martin bringing PICK ME UP straight to Melbourne to resume. Has trialled well. DEMOLITION goes in the quaddie (and it’s a wide one).

SUGGESTED: HANDSOME THIEF to repay some faith 9and money).

QUADDIE:

2-3-5-7-8-11-12

1

6-8-10-15

1-6-10-12-18

$70 for 50%
