The Goodwood Free Tips, Bets and Field Preview – 2020

The Goodwood is the race that we’ve been waiting for since the Adelaide Autumn Carnival commenced and a fittingly strong field of sprinters will step out at Morphettville on Saturday.

The Goodwood has been won by some truly outstanding horses in recent seasons and with names like Santa Ana Lane, Trekking and Gytrash all confirmed in this year’s field, yet another will be added to the illustrious list.

The Goodwood – Winner

No. 1 Santa Ana Lane – Bet Now: $7.00

I might be a bigger fan of Santa Ana Lane than Anthony Freedman and he looks over the odds in The Goodwood betting at around the $7 mark.

The five-time Group 1 winner actually tasted success in The Goodwood a couple of years ago and while it has now been more than a year since he won a race, he is still more than up to the task.

He needed the run when finishing down the order in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes when resuming but led home a wall of horses when second in the TJ.

A repeat of that effort would see him extremely difficult to beat again.

The Goodwood – 2nd

No. 3 Gytrash – Bet Now: $3.70

Gytrash has gone to another level this preparation and he certainly would not look out of place in The Goodwood winner’s stall.

The Lope De Vega entire was a shock winner of the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning down the straight at Flemington when resuming but proved that was no fluke in running third and second in the Newmarket Handicap and William Reid respectively.

He returned to Adelaide for a dominant win in the Group 3 RN Irwin three weeks ago and he is rock-hard fit for this task.

The Goodwood – 3rd

No. 2 Trekking – Bet Now: $7.50

Trekking is as tough as they come, and he is primed for another big performance in The Goodwood.

The Street Cry gelding ended his autumn and winter prep last year with a maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 Stradbroke and continued to impress in the spring, winning the Group 2 Rubiton and running third in The Everest most notably.

He found his rivals a touch too sharp when seventh in the TJ first-up this time, but only just missed winning the Group 3 Hall Mark last time out.

He harbours further improvement and is drawn a peach in barrier 6.

The Goodwood – 4th

No. 7 The Inevitable – Bet Now: $9.00

Tasmanian raider The Inevitable is one of many Scott Brunton-trained horses that have been transferred to the care of Patrick Payne on the mainland since the outbreak of COVID-19, and The Goodwood looks an ideal Group 1 target for him.

The Dundeel gelding is a multiple black type winner and won the Silver Eagle in impressive fashion most notably in spring.

He finished down the order in the Newmarket when fresh this time but carried a big weight to a close second at Flemington last time out.

The is a rise in class, but he’ll relish a big drop in the weights, and he is another horse that is sure to have enjoyed good improvement.
