Tommy Berry rides four winners at Randwick

Tommy Berry has lit up a genuine mid-winter program at Randwick with a four-winner haul to equal his best day on a racetrack.

The top jockey narrowly missed landing five when Bandersnatch was edged out by Ballet Master in the last of nine races.

After leading throughout to win the Highway Handicap on Partners ($7.50), Berry added wins on Hawkes Racing’s latest staying prospect Mount Popa ($2.60), Poetic Charmer ($21) and Agassi ($8), all for different trainers.

The top jockey said he came to the races confident he had some good rides but he did not predict his starring role.

“I actually said to my Dad on the way to the races, I’ve got two really good chances, which are obviously Bandersnatch and the Hawkes horse,” Berry said.

“A few of my other rides were well-placed, I thought. Even Agassi, he was double-figures at acceptances but he’s been so consistent.

“I had the right horses if they got the right runs on the right day.”

It is not the first time Berry has ridden four winners.

He had a quartet at Rosehill this time last year and also took out four races at a feature Doomben meeting in 2012, including a stakes double on Driefontein and Kontiki Park.
