Too Darn Discreet begins her campaign at Flemington on Saturday, with trainer Dan O’Sullivan hoping it leads to a Group 1 win in Adelaide.
The ultimate goal for Too Darn Discreet is the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville in late April, a race her dam, Maybe Discreet, won in 2013.
“Her goal is the Australasian Oaks in South Australia, where all her owners are,” O’Sullivan said. “She’ll start on Saturday, possibly go to the Kewney after that, and we’ll pick something in between for her preparation.”
O’Sullivan plans to keep her in Melbourne as long as possible before making the trip to Adelaide.
Last campaign, Too Darn Discreet thrived when stepping up in distance, winning the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) and the Group 3 Ethereal Stakes (2000m). She was then sixth in the Group 1 VRC Oaks (2500m) at Flemington.
O’Sullivan believes Too Darn Discreet kept a good level of fitness during her month-long break. She showed she’s on track for her return with a strong second-place finish in a recent trial at Geelong, beaten by New Zealand Group 1 winner Here To Shock.
“She’s quite athletic and retained her fitness, but she still lays in during trials, which we’ll keep working on,” O’Sullivan said.
To address this, a lugging bit will be added to her race-day gear on Saturday, though O’Sullivan has yet to experiment with blinkers.
“We haven’t tried blinkers or a one-eyed blinker yet. The problem is she doesn’t do it at home, only on race day under pressure,” O’Sullivan explained. “It’s something we’ll keep working on, like Northerly and Pinstriped did.”
