Trainer Bernie Miller chasing a feature race double

Bernie Miller says Sheza Chalmer is going as well as ever and he’s confident the classy filly can end her campaign on a high by winning a Listed race double on the weekend.

Following her impressive victory in last fortnight’s Belmont Guineas (1600m), Sheza Chalmer is certain to have a wave of supporters in Saturday’s Belmont Oaks (2000m).

“She is going real good and hasn’t had a backward step,” Bernie Miller told The Races WA.

“She’s been eating well and still displaying her feisty nature.

“She’ll have a pre-race gallop tomorrow (Tuesday), but she did some real smart work on Saturday morning.

“She worked over a mile, worked and galloped the last 400m, 200m before the post and 200m up the hill.

“She came back like she hadn’t even been out there.

“She is going really, really good and I’m very happy with her.

“She’s got the ability to run a very good race on Saturday.”

Sheza Chalmer passed her first 1600m test in the Belmont Guineas with aplomb, running home powerfully from eighth position and defeating Kerman Rock by one length.

Miller says if she handles another step up in trip as expected, it adds another string to her bow when she returns for the Ascot carnival later in the year.

“This will be her final run this prep and it gives me 20 weeks to get her ready for those fillies and mares races,” Miller said.

“If she was to come out and run a bottler of a race on Saturday then it opens up a big book.

“She goes from being a 1200m horse to one who can cover some ground.

“She has bounced out of her last run in good order and it didn’t knock her around.

“I would have known about it by now if the effort fatigued her and it hasn’t.”

Meanwhile Miller is also bullish about stable flagbearer Cup Night.

The Maschino gelding is back on track after illness prevented him from racing since the Roma Cup (1200m) in May.

“He came back into work today,” Miller said.

“He looks absolutely fantastic.

“He’s put some nice weight on and is all muscled up.

“He looks fantastic.”
