Top jockey Tyler Schiller has been taken to hospital with a suspected back injury after a fall before the first race at Canterbury on Wednesday.

Schiller was dislodged from debutant Rockabye Roxy, trained by Gary Portelli, when the filly bucked on her way to the track, throwing him over her neck.

He remained conscious and was moving his legs as paramedics treated him, before being transported to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

“He’s got a back injury,” Racing NSW chief steward Steve Railton said.

“They will obviously identify the significance of it when he gets to hospital.”

Schiller was stood down from his remaining rides and is in doubt for Saturday’s Eagle Farm meeting, where he is booked to ride early favourite Gallo Nero in the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).

Rockabye Roxy was unharmed but scratched, delaying the race by 35 minutes.

The rescheduled Ranvet Handicap (1100m) was won by Terry Croft’s Gilette ($41), a $16,000 buy who has now earned over $70,000 after a win and two placings from three starts.
