Consistent stayer Pounding has accumulated a notable collection of second-place finishes, but few horses are more deserving of a victory.
With this in mind, trainers Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman are providing him with another chance to secure a win by entering him into Saturday’s Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m) at the Sunshine Coast.
The seven-year-old gelding has finished as the runner-up in five of his last seven outings. While his reliability is commendable, it’s also a source of frustration for his connections.
“Pounding is probably going to run second on Saturday, just like he has in almost every other race this preparation,” Coleman quipped.
Pounding’s last three races have all resulted in second placings, commencing with the Andrew Ramsden Stakes (2800m) in May, followed by the Q22 (2200m), and then the Tattersall’s Cup (2400m) last weekend.
He appears well-positioned again from a favourable low draw in the Caloundra Cup, but Coleman is tempering expectations, admitting the stable felt similarly last week before Pounding was narrowly beaten by Chris Waller’s Asterix.
“We thought that about the race last Saturday, to be honest,” she said.
“But he’s on the seven day back-up, which we know he can handle. He is honest. He always goes out there and runs a race.
“He just needs the stars to align and everything to fall into place for him to win one. Hopefully Saturday is the day.”
Daniel Moor is scheduled to ride Pounding, who has experienced a quiet week in the lead-up to the Sunshine Coast feature race.
The horse is aiming for his first win since the 2024 Sale Cup (1600m) and is currently positioned as the second favourite in early betting markets at $5.50, trailing the in-form Sydney stayer Thebudgiesmugla who is priced at $3.70.
