Whether they win, lose or draw, the intense demands of a Golden Slipper can frequently prove demanding for two-year-olds, yet Chris Waller indicates that hasn’t applied to promising colt Campione D’italia.
“You wouldn’t know he’s had a run,” Waller said.
The Snitzel youngster delivered what might be the standout effort in the Golden Slipper by charging from the rear on the turn to finish fourth, only two lengths adrift of victor Guest House.
This came after a close success in the Skyline Stakes (1200m) where he also surged late from off the pace, indicating Saturday’s Group 1 Sires’ Produce Stakes over 1400m at Randwick should suit him even better.
“The Golden Slipper was only his third start in a race and he’s getting more tractable each time he runs,” Waller said.
“And he’s learning all the time. He’s coping really well with his racing.”
Campione D’Italia will jump from barrier three in the 14-horse lineup for Saturday, with stablemate Fireball facing a tough draw in barrier 12.
The latter ended up midfield in the Slipper, and although he didn’t look like winning, Waller felt that, similar to his stable companion, he was seeking more distance.
“He wasn’t beaten far and I thought he raced like a 1400 metre horse too,” he said.
Five from the 14 Sires’ Produce Stakes participants raced in the opening leg of the juvenile triple crown, which includes the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) over at Randwick on April 18.
The remaining Slipper participants in the Sires’ include Blue Diamond Stakes winner and Slipper runner-up Streisand, along with Zambales (ninth) and Paradoxium (eleventh).
