Chris Waller will make a final decision about Aeliana’s participation in the ATC Australian Oaks on Tuesday morning, though it’s unlikely the ATC Australian Derby winner will race in the 2400-metre Group 1.
Waller, speaking from the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, confirmed Aeliana has recovered well from her 5-1/4-length Derby victory, but her physical condition is just one factor in the decision-making process.
Although a win in the Oaks could enhance Aeliana’s bid for the Champion 3YO Filly title, Waller is considering even bigger goals for the filly.
“Aeliana has had a pretty busy three-year-old year… she will be bigger and stronger in the spring as a four-year-old,” Waller said.
He added, “She’s got nothing more to prove really, other than the honours of being the 3YO Filly of the Year.”
Aeliana’s historic Derby win put her at the top of Caulfield Cup markets and made her second favourite for the Melbourne Cup.
Waller also praised Belle Detelle, who won the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes, but suggested the filly might be directed elsewhere for her next race.
Waller’s likely ATC Oaks contender is Leica Lucy, the recent New Zealand Oaks winner. The filly’s performance in work on Tuesday will determine if she races in the ATC Oaks.
