Chris Waller’s Apollo Stakes contenders will headline Randwick’s card this Saturday, but the champion trainer has additional talents making their return in the day’s $300,000 Group 2 races.
Joliestar has been nominated for the 1400-metre Apollo, alongside Via Sistina, Fangirl, and Atishu, but is set to begin her campaign in the 1200m Expressway Stakes.
The four-year-old is one of three Waller entries for the Expressway, with Olentia and Lindermann, also nominated for the Apollo Stakes.
A Group 1 winner at 1600m, thanks to her 2023 Thousand Guineas victory, Joliestar was also an eye-catching winner of the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m) in her first-up run last time. She had a tough run in The Everest (1200m), despite finishing seventh.
Waller is still unsure where Joliestar will fit into the autumn plans, looking to her first two runs for more clarity.
“We’re still working out whether we’ll get her out to a mile,” Waller said.
“She’s got a lot of speed, and I’d say we’ll go to the Canterbury Stakes second-up.”
“If she wins that, then she’ll probably go to the TJ, otherwise, she’ll likely head to the mares’ races.”
The $750,000 Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) at Randwick is on March 8, with the $3 million Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) following on April 5.
Should Joliestar take the mares’ path, Waller is considering the $1m Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill on March 15 and the weight-for-age $1m Queen Of The Turf (1600m) at Randwick on April 12.
Magic Time, another Group 1 winner, is also nominated for the Expressway Stakes, while Joe Pride’s King Charles III Stakes winner Ceolwulf is the standout in the Apollo Stakes.
The other $300,000 Group 2 is the Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) for three-year-old fillies, featuring Waller’s Flight Stakes winner Lady Shenandoah and last year’s Golden Slipper winner Lady Of Camelot.
