The decision to geld Watson at the conclusion of last year has already proven worthwhile, and jockey Tim Clark believes the Tulloch Lodge galloper is poised to continue his winning streak at Randwick.

After managing just one placing from three starts as a juvenile colt, the four-year-old underwent the procedure before resuming in January and promptly secured two victories at Kembla Grange and Canterbury.

When elevated directly to Group company, the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained contender performed admirably, securing fourth place behind Tempted in the Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m).

He now contests Saturday’s Chandon Handicap (1200m) at Randwick, following a recent midweek triumph over Clear Proof. Clear Proof subsequently enhanced the formline with a win at Canterbury on Wednesday. Clark anticipates Watson will perform well, despite an unfavourable barrier draw in 12.

“His record as a gelding is really good,” Clark stated.

“It was a good win first-up with improvement to come. He’s taking that improvement into the weekend and he’s worked very well during the week.

“He’ll make his presence felt.

“I also feel the drier the track gets, the better for him.”

Although Saturday’s race is at benchmark level, Clark is confident Watson possesses the ability to progress to higher-calibre races.

He finished four lengths behind Tempted in the Eskimo Prince Stakes, and less than three lengths adrift of the runner-up Napoleonic. Napoleonic has since placed in the Doomben 10,000 and is expected to be a strong contender in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) this Saturday.

“He ran really well in that race, and a hot race it was,” Clark remarked. “With where his rating is at, he can go through the ratings system, get good prizemoney, and if and when the time is right, Gai and Adrian can step him back into a harder race.”
