Weather key to hopes of Biometric at Flemington

After breaking through for his maiden Australian win at Caulfield, Biometric will attempt a stakes race win at Flemington.

The weather gods may smile on the new Lindsay Park operation of Ben and JD Hayes as they chase their first Victorian stakes race victory.

Last start Caulfield winner Biometric runs in the Listed VRC/CRV Winter Championship Final (1600m) on Saturday with the Lindsay Park trainers hoping for a track that is not too wet.

The Flemington track was rated a Soft 5 on Thursday although 2-4mm may fall on Friday and another 1mm on Saturday.

But the good news for the Hayes brothers is the rail goes back into the true position.

Biometric broke through for his first Australian victory over 1400m at Caulfield on May 29 under the guidance of Harry Coffey, who retains the ride on Saturday.

That was the gelding’s 10th Australian start and while it is five weeks between runs, Ben Hayes said the gelding was in top order.

A softish track, coupled with a wide draw, resulted in Biometric missing Caulfield last week in favour of Saturday’s final.

“We’re really happy with him. We’re just trying to get a track that is on the dry side,” Ben Hayes said.

“A Soft 6 we’d probably run but anything worse, we may decide against running him.

“He’s going well. He’s had a tick-over jump-out at Flemington last Friday which was a nice hit-out.

“The mile is probably a question mark, but if he gets a nice soft run, he’ll run a nice race.”

While Coffey may not be one of Lindsay Park’s ‘go to riders’ the jockey has made the most of limited opportunities for the stable.

He was called upon for some country meetings and got the call-up for Biometric at Caulfield.

“He rode him excellent last start and he deserves to keep the ride,” Hayes said.

“It’s pretty hard to take a last start winning jockey off a horse.

“You have to some loyalty.”
