A difference in weights enticed trainer Chris Munce to dodge Thursday’s Lismore Cup with Cauthen’s Power in favour of running at Ipswich on Saturday.

Cauthen’s Power, who is part-owned by Australian cricket captain Steve Smith, has been gradually working into top form since joining Munce’s stables from Sydney’s Chris Waller five months ago.

Munce believes the City of Ipswich Spring Stayers Cup (2150m) will suit Cauthen’s Power perfectly.

“He had 61 kilos in the Lismore Cup and with Matt McGillivray’s claim at Ipswich he should carry 52.5 kilos,” Munce said.

“It is a big difference and there wasn’t that much between the two races,” Munce said.

Cauthen’s Power has been running in the northern rivers Cups without much luck.

“He was one of the horses eased out of the race in the Murwillumbah Cup when the false start siren accidentally went off,” Munce said.

“In the Ballina Cup he got shunted back through the field but made up a lot of ground.

“I liked the way he hit the line last start and with a light weight he should give Saturday’s race a good shake.”

Cauthen’s Power was Warwick Farm 1600m race winner in January and has been placed up to 2000m.
