Trainer David Page is eyeing Saturday’s Leon Macdonald Stakes (1400m) at Morphettville as the perfect lead-up for stable star Wild Imagination before next month’s Balaklava Cup and a possible Perth Cup tilt.

The mare delivered Page his biggest success earlier this year in the Listed Premier’s Plate (2000m) and is two runs into her current campaign, having contested the Mildura Cup and Behemoth Stakes.

Page admits the 1400m trip may not be her ideal, but he’s pleased with her progress and believes she can run boldly despite being a $51 outsider.

“She’s probably not at her right trip just yet but just with her rating as high as it is, it’s a bit hard to place her,” Page said.

The trainer has mapped out feature country cups in South Australia before heading to Western Australia in November, with the Perth Cup a likely summer target.

Victorian raiders Splash Back, Running By and Café Millenium are among the leading hopes for the Leon Macdonald Stakes.
