Ginger Baker to step up in Farnley Stakes

Ginger Baker’s outstanding winter campaign could even get better when he chases a maiden Listed victory in the Furphy-Farnley Stakes (1400m) at Belmont Park on Saturday.

Ginger Baker has won four races this preparation, including the $100,000 Blue Spec Stakes (1600m) last-start, inspiring trainer Vernon Brockman to test him at stakes level for the first time.

Ginger Baker bolted in to win the Blue Spec Stakes by two lengths, defeating Alaskan God, who kicks off his Melbourne campaign in the G2 Feehan Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley.

Ginger Baker faces his biggest test in the Farnley Stakes, but jockey Brad Parnham has unwavering confidence and is looking for the six-year-old to answer the challenge.

Parnham continues his successful partnership with Ginger Baker, having ridden the son of Gingerbread Man in all four victories since his campaign kicked off in April.

Parnham is confident Ginger Baker can continue his winning momentum and says he deserves to have a crack at taking out a stakes race at his first attempt.

“For him to have a crack at a Listed race, he deserves it,” Parnham said on Tabradio.

“It’s probably the right Listed race for him, he gets in well, he’s got a low weight which he will really appreciate.

“It’s a handy field, there are no superstars, so I think he will race pretty well.

“He keeps taking the next step in this preparation and I’ve learned not to be surprised by him.

“He should go pretty well and will take some beating.”

Ginger Baker has been a big firmer, into $5 from $7. He’s on the third line of betting behind Searchin’ Roc’s $4 and Nerodio $4.60.

Ginger Baker carries 54.5kg, 1kg less than last start and in a field of 13 starters he’s drawn to get a good run from barrier seven.

Parnham is also bullish about the chances of Auspicious in the Glenroy Chaff Plate (1000m) after her return win three weeks ago.

Auspicious has carried high expectations since winning her first 400m trial by a whopping 15 lengths at Lark Hill last August.

She is currently second favourite at Boombet ($3.90) behind Oscar’s Fortune, an impressive winner on debut at Belmont last month.

“I think she’ll be hard to beat,” Parnham said.

“Obviously Oscar’s Fortune looks pretty good, but we’ll be right there.”

Oscar’s Fortune, with William Pike in the saddle, jumps from barrier four. Auspicious commences in gate six with the scratching of Tawkin’ Jibberish.
