After a wait of three weeks past her due date, the legendary mare Winx has finally delivered her third foal at Coolmore Stud, with the birth proceeding without any complications.
Debbie Kepitis, a co-owner of the iconic mare, informed Racing And Sports that anticipation had been high, with Winx eventually foaling around 10pm last night.
“Winx has been overdue with her foals before but we just let nature takes its course,” Mrs Kepitis said. “But both Winx and her foal are doing really well, it’s very exciting.”
Peter and Peter Tighe, who share ownership of Winx, had been present at Coolmore Stud for five days in anticipation of the birth. However, they had departed for home yesterday afternoon and missed the actual event.
“We got home after 8pm and Winx gave birth an hour or two later,” Peter Tighe told Racing And Sports. “But all that matters is that Winx and her foal are healthy and well, so it’s great news. We are already planning to go back to the stud later this week to see Winx but all the reports we are getting from Coolmore is that she has produced a beautiful filly, probably her best foal yet.”
Tom Magnier, the prominent figure at Coolmore Stud, commented on the palpable excitement among the farm’s staff following the arrival of Winx’s latest offspring.
“It’s been a long wait for Winx to have her foal but everything went smoothly last night,” Magnier said. “Winx is a wonderful ‘Mum’ and she has produced a very good foal so we are delighted. Winx was born and raised at Coolmore and it is an honour to have her back at the farm as a broodmare.”
This marks Winx’s third foal. Previously, she produced a filly by Pierro, which Mrs Kepitis acquired for a then-world record $10 million at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sales two years ago. Her second foal is a colt by Snitzel, now a two-year-old, who remains unnamed.
The Pierro filly, named Quincineara, was retired without racing and was recently served by Super Seth. Winx’s Snitzel colt was withdrawn from this year’s Inglis Easter Yearling Sale but has successfully completed rehabilitation and is currently undergoing exercise on a water walker.
Mr Tighe indicated that Winx’s ownership syndicate will convene shortly to discuss the possibility of her being served again this spring. However, it is probable that she will be granted some respite before returning to the breeding barn next year.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest racehorses ever, Winx achieved 37 victories from 43 starts, including an astonishing streak of 33 consecutive wins, accumulating a world record 25 Group 1 victories. Under the training of Chris Waller, her accolades include four Cox Plates, four George Ryder Stakes, three Queen Elizabeth Stakes, three George Main Stakes, a Doncaster Mile, and an Epsom Handicap, earning her Legend status and induction into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame.
