Yarra Valley Cup change of plans for Basilinna

The reprogrammed Yarra Valley Cup has led to a shift in plans for Emma-Lee and David Browne-trained Basilinna.

The Yarra Valley Cup, initially set for 1950m last Sunday, was called off due to rain and poor track conditions. It has now been rescheduled as a benchmark 100 race as part of an 11-race program at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

Basilinna was already nominated for two Saturday races – a benchmark 84 over 1500m and the Group 2 Sunline Stakes (1600m) – before the Yarra Valley Cup was added.

Originally aimed for the Sunline Stakes, the Brownes now feel the Yarra Valley Cup is a better start, despite the longer distance.

“I don’t know if she is a winning chance first-up, but so long as she’s hitting the line and showing that she still wants to be involved, that will please us,” said Emma-Lee Browne.

Basilinna impressed in 2023, finishing third in both the Ethereal Stakes (2000m) and VRC Oaks (2500m).

After some setbacks last spring, the Brownes are hopeful she’s back on track after a good break.

“We’ve got no plans for her after Saturday,” Browne said. “She’s already taken us on an amazing ride, so hopefully we can enhance her pedigree.”
