Tony and Maddysen Sears will look to kickstart a huge weekend for Queensland when Yellow Brick contests the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick.
The gelding is the state’s sole representative and Maddy Sears, his trainer and regular trackwork rider, believes he can replicate his Stradbroke Handicap heroics, where he charged home for second behind War Machine.
Yellow Brick’s midfield finish in the Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400m) was more promising than it appeared, Sears said, given he carried 59.5kg and raced closer to the speed than usual.
“He raced way too close in his last start,” she said.
“We weren’t disappointed… We’re hoping he gets the same run he did in the Stradbroke.”
Dropping to 55.5kg and drawn 11, Yellow Brick is expected to settle back and unleash his trademark finish.
Sears has kept him in Sydney since and reports he is thriving.
He joins fellow Brisbane winter carnival performers Pier, Depth Of Character and Verona Rose, with trainer Annabel Archibald declaring Depth Of Character “a great chance” in the famous Randwick mile.
